What Type of Massage Do I Need? A Guide to Choosing the Right Massage in Bath

Start with how you want to feel. Choosing a massage can sometimes be confusing. You may know that you need some time for yourself, but not necessarily which treatment to book.

Perhaps you feel tired and simply want to relax. Maybe your shoulders have become increasingly tight, your body feels heavy, or you’ve spent the day walking around Bath and your feet are asking for a little attention.

At Mediterranean Therapy in Bath, we like to start with a simple question: how would you like to feel after your treatment?

You don’t need to know the names of different massage techniques or decide exactly what your body needs before you arrive. A short conversation with your therapist can help guide the treatment.

Here are some of the options to consider.

Book your professional Massage in Bath.

When you simply need to relax

Sometimes there isn’t a particular problem to fix. You simply feel tired, stressed or mentally busy and would like an hour to slow down.

A Swedish Massage can be a lovely choice in this situation. Flowing movements and comfortable pressure help create a deeply relaxing experience while gently easing everyday muscular tension.

It can be particularly enjoyable after travelling or sightseeing, or simply at the end of a demanding week.

Massage doesn’t always have to be about pain. Giving yourself permission to stop for an hour, breathe and let somebody else take care of you can be valuable in itself.

When your muscles feel tight

If your body feels more tense than tired, you may prefer a Deep Tissue Massage.

This type of treatment can focus more specifically on areas of muscular tightness perhaps around the back, shoulders or legs with the techniques and pressure adapted to you.

And Deep Tissue doesn’t have to mean enduring as much pressure as possible.

A good treatment should respond to your body rather than fight against it. Your therapist can adjust the pressure throughout the session, so don’t be afraid to say what feels comfortable.

If your tension is mainly around your upper back, neck and shoulders, a focused Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage may be enough, particularly when you don’t have time for a longer appointment.

When you prefer a gentler approach

Not everybody wants or needs deeper pressure.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage using the Vodder Method is quite different from a traditional massage. It uses very gentle, rhythmic movements and can be a good option when you are specifically looking for a gentle, specialised approach.

It is also important not to confuse Manual Lymphatic Drainage with stronger body-sculpting techniques. Although both may sometimes be described as lymphatic treatments, their techniques and purposes are different.

At Mediterranean Therapy, we can explain the difference and help you understand which approach may be more appropriate for what you are looking for.

When you want warmth and comfort

There are days when what you want most from a massage is warmth, comfort and the feeling of completely switching off.

A Hot Stone Massage can be particularly enjoyable then. Warm stones are combined with massage techniques to encourage relaxation and help ease muscular tension.

It’s a lovely treatment during Bath’s cooler months, but also after a long day exploring the city.

If you’ve spent hours walking around the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and the city’s Georgian streets, you may discover that your feet need attention more than your shoulders. In that case, a shorter treatment such as our Mediterranean Foot Ritual may be a better choice.

A Scalp Massage or focused Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage can also work well when you have only 30 minutes available.

Choosing the right massage isn’t always about choosing the longest treatment. Sometimes it’s about spending the time exactly where you need it.

When you’re visiting Bath together

If you’re spending a weekend or special day in Bath with your partner or a friend, massage can become part of the experience you share.

A Couples Massage allows two people to enjoy their treatments at the same time. You can relax together without necessarily having exactly the same massage or pressure each treatment can still be adapted to the individual.

Our studio is in Bath city centre, approximately one minute’s walk from Thermae Bath Spa, so it’s easy to include a massage as part of a day exploring or relaxing in the city.

When you’re visiting Bath, having your massage right in the city centre can make a real difference to your day. You can enjoy your treatment and then simply step back out into the heart of the city, without having to spend part of your visit travelling elsewhere.

Still not sure which massage to choose?

That’s completely fine.

You don’t need to diagnose yourself, understand anatomy or arrive knowing exactly which technique you need.

Think instead about what you’re experiencing today.

Are you looking for relaxation? Is there one area that feels particularly tight? Would you prefer something gentle? Have you spent all day on your feet? Or would you like to enjoy the experience together with someone?

A good consultation should help you feel confident about what you’re booking, and your treatment can then be adapted to how your body feels that day.

At Mediterranean Therapy, our approach is personal rather than one-size-fits-all. We can talk through the options with you and help you choose a treatment that feels right for your needs.

Our studio is located in the heart of Bath, close to the city’s main attractions and approximately one minute’s walk from Thermae Bath Spa.
